The study indicates that there was a significant improvement in the majority of the cases, clinically and hematologically among those that completed 2 years of treatment. Those cases where the CD4 was less than 200/mm despite treatment, Kaposi sarcoma and tuberculosis were the commonest cause of the failure to improve. Prognosis improved with time because 83% of the deaths occurred during the first 6 months of treatment, 13% in the next 6 months while 4% occurred after one complete year of treatment.

Deaths during the first 6 months were mainly due to complications like Kaposi sarcoma, malaria, bacterial gastroenteritis due to salmonella, shigella, and E. coli resistant to most antibiotics including chloramphenicol, ampicillin, and spectrin, before we found them sensitive to rifampicin and gentamicin and cephalexin. Most of the dead presented CD4 less than 100/mm, severe anorexia, severe wasting and dehydration.

During the subsequent 6 months, the toll was remarkably reduced by using gentamycin and rifampicin for bacterial enteritis, fansidar chemoprophylaxis for malaria. The anti-tuberculosis regime used was rifampicin, isoniaxid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol.

There were causes that failed to show a significant rise in CD4 count despite the medication. These were later found to be suffering from kaposi sarcoma that had not been diagnosed clinically because it was either pulmonary or gastrointestinal. Where it involved the lungs, Kaposi sarcoma was not often diagnosed correctly. These are some of the cases where CD4 counts were as low as zero. The CD4/CD8 ratio of less than unity (persisting despite intense treatment for months) was bad prognosis.

What is the Effect of Mariandina in the AIDS Victim?

AIDS is a disease of modern man beset with foreign vices, a polluted environment and new lifestyles. It is sad to watch carefree young men and women happily flocking to smoky pubs to carouse with rich widows or widowers now being mass produced by this deadly virus. As you know, they often leave behind a grim contribution to the national problems in the form of orphans laden with HIV as their sole inheritance.
